Description

Cetearyl Alcohol – Consistency Agent, Co-emulsifier

Cetearyl Alcohol is a consistency agent, co-emulsifier, and structural emollient. It does not possess standalone emulsifying properties; however, it performs optimally alongside a primary emulsifier, increasing viscosity, stabilizing emulsions, and providing a velvety texture.

Ingredients (INCI): Cetearyl Alcohol.

Technical Characteristics

  • Appearance: White pellets or granules, with a faint characteristic odor.
  • Solubility: Soluble in oils upon heating.
  • Quality: Blend of natural vegetable-derived fatty alcohols, Cetyl Alcohol and Stearyl Alcohol.
  • Cosmetic Function: Thickening/consistency agent for emulsions, lipophilic co-emulsifier, emollient, opacifier.
  • General Dosage: 0.5 - 20%

Main Properties

  • Stabilizer: Works alongside the primary emulsifier to form stable emulsions; delivers rich yet lightweight and non-greasy textures.
  • Viscosity Agent: Increases the density and body of emulsions without weighing down the formula, providing a creamy structure that remains stable under temperature fluctuations.
  • Secondary Emollient: Smooths the hair cuticle and skin micro-relief, reducing water evaporation by forming a non-occlusive film.
  • Sensory Enhancer: Improves cream glide on the skin, reduces the tackiness of heavy oils, and imparts an optimal appearance to emulsions.

Applications

  • Moisturizing creams, facial serums for all skin types.
  • Hair conditioners, hair masks, and conditioning treatments.
  • Creamy hygiene products: cleansing creams, cleansing milks, solid shampoo bars.
  • Makeup products.
  • Solid deodorants, balms.

Formulation Guide

  • Procedure: Add to the oil phase of the formulation. Heat the mixture to approximately 60°C - 70°C or as required by other ingredients in the formula.
  • Recommended Usage Dosage: 1% - 5% in light creams; 5% - 10% in dense creams or hair masks; up to 20% - 30% in solid anhydrous products (balms, sticks).
  • Stability: Stable across a wide pH range.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will this alcohol dry out the skin?
No. Chemically, there is a major difference between alcohols such as Ethanol or Isopropyl Alcohol (which are volatile liquids that evaporate quickly and can dissolve the skin's natural lipids, causing dryness) and fatty alcohols such as Cetearyl Alcohol. Fatty alcohols are waxy solids; they do not evaporate or dry out the skin, but instead function as hydrophobic emollients that help maintain skin hydration.

My cream turned out far too compact and difficult to spread. What went wrong?
Too high a percentage of Cetearyl Alcohol was likely used, or the lipid phase contains too many waxes. To fluidize the texture and improve spreadability, reduce the dosage in the next batch and compensate for the difference by adding light esters or low-viscosity oils.

Safety in Use and Storage

Safety Profile: Stable, non-irritating raw material, widely used in products formulated for sensitive skin.
Precautions: For external cosmetic use only.
Storage: Keep in a closed container, in a dry, cool place, protected from direct sunlight.

I use it quite rarely, when I make solid body lotion. Basically, I replace some of the beeswax with it, to get a higher hardness without the occlusive risk of beeswax.

It is a product that helps to stabilize and increase the viscosity of preparations. It is part of many recipes, helping to preserve creams / solutions, which is why it should not be missing from the kit

Denne alkohol kan bruges i et utal af sammenhænge. Det vigtigste, synes jeg, er at den stammer fra planter. Det er vigtig både for mig og de kunder, jeg sælger til.
