Black soap is hand-crafted by women cooperatives in the north of Ghana from locally harvested raw materials: shea butter, coconut oil, palm kernel oil and cocoa pod potash.
The soap is prepared by hot saponification process. The oils are melted, the potash solution is added to the warm oils, the ingredients are cooked together and the resulting soap is let to cool and solidify under stirring. The soap mass is poured then into moulds of various shapes and sizes.
