Fragard
Description
Fragard Preservative
Natural preservation solution of plant origin with a vanilla-almond scent.
Fragard is a multifunctional ingredient derived from plant raw materials that combines preservation with formula fragrancing. Thanks to its broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, yeasts, and molds, it allows for the formulation of cosmetic products free from classic synthetic preservatives while maintaining the microbiological stability of the finished product.
Its sweet aroma with vanilla notes makes it possible to omit additional fragrance in many recipes, making it a practical formulation solution for emulsions, gels, or gentle cleansing products. It is a suitable ingredient for natural formulations and products aiming to avoid conventional preservatives.
Ingredients (INCI): Parfum
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Clear liquid; colorless to pale yellow; characteristic sweet odor with a vanilla note
- Solubility: Dispersible in water up to a concentration of 0.6%
- Quality: Plant-derived ingredient, formulated according to IFRA recommendations
- Recommended Dosage: 0.4 - 1% as a complete preservation solution, depending on formulation type
Scientific Studies and Documentation
According to studies conducted by the producer of this ingredient, antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), established at 0.5% for major reference strains: Staphylococcus aureus (Gram+), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli (Gram-), Candida albicans (yeast), and Aspergillus brasiliensis (mold).
Also according to the producer, challenge tests (full protection) were conducted on several types of finished formulations, non-ionic and anionic gels, O/W emulsions, and shampoos, at concentrations of 0.5% and 1%, with all tested formulations meeting Criterion A of the European Pharmacopoeia, indicating an optimal rate of reduction in microbial load. Antimicrobial efficacy is maintained across a broad pH range between 4.0 and 9.0.
Properties and Benefits
- Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram+, Gram- bacteria, yeasts, and molds
- Functions effectively across a broad pH range (4.0 - 9.0)
- Sweet aroma with a vanilla note that can replace additional formula fragrancing
- Enables the formulation of products labeled as free from classic preservatives
- Good stability in formula, compatible with most common cosmetic ingredients
Applications
- Face and body creams
- Gentle cleansing products, cleansers, cleansing gels
- Personal care formulations in general
- Suitable solution for formulations seeking "preservative-free" labeling
Formulation Guide
- Recommended dosage: 0.4 - 1% as a complete preservation solution
- In O/W (oil-in-water) emulsions, add at the end of the formulation process at a maximum of 40°C
- In transparent systems, such as hydrogels, the use of a solubilizer is necessary
- In surfactant-based cleansing products, add directly into the surfactant mixture
- Dispersible in water up to 0.6%; for higher dosages, add the remainder at the end after the main phase is homogenized
- Compatible with most substances commonly used in cosmetics
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Ingredient with good skin tolerance, non-irritating and non-sensitizing according to in vivo tests (patch test) by the producer
- Precautions: External cosmetic use; avoid direct contact with eyes
- Storage: Store in a tightly closed container in a cool place, protected from direct light
