Hyaluronic acid LMW
Description
LMW Hyaluronic Acid - Low Molecular Weight
LMW Hyaluronic Acid (low molecular weight) is a cosmetic active obtained through advanced biotechnology from plant sources. Due to the small size of its molecules, this type has the ability to overcome the surface barrier of the skin and penetrate deeper into the epidermal layers. Acting deep within, it infuses cells with moisture, recharges the skin's water reserves, and can indirectly stimulate the endogenous production of collagen and structural hyaluronic acid. Unlike the HMW variant, LMW hyaluronic acid does not form a surface film, but works toward internal restructuring, improving skin firmness, boosting elasticity, and diminishing the appearance of wrinkles from within.
Ingredients (INCI): Sodium Hyaluronate
Technical Characteristics
- Molecular Weight: Low, in the range of 10-200 kDa (Kilodaltons)
- Appearance: Fine powder, white, odorless.
- Solubility: Completely water-soluble. Unlike the HMW variant, it does not increase the viscosity of solutions and does not form a gel.
- Cosmetic function: Deep humectant, structural anti-aging agent, elasticity booster.
- Indicative dosage: 0.1% - 1%.
Information from Specialized Literature
The penetration capacity and histological effects of Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid are demonstrated through clinical studies and advanced skin imaging techniques:
- Epidermal Penetration: Spectroscopic studies have confirmed the dynamic difference between hyaluronic fractions. While large molecules remain on the surface, small-sized hyaluronic acid penetrates efficiently through the stratum corneum, distributing into the deeper layers of the epidermis where it captures water directly in intercellular niches.
- Reduction of Wrinkle Depth: Clinical evaluations conducted on human subjects showed that long-term use of leave-on formulas with LMW hyaluron leads to a measurable decrease in the depth of expression lines, due to the volumetric expansion effect through water retention deep within the epidermis.
- Stimulation of Elasticity and Endogenous Synthesis: Scientific literature documents that the presence of small hyaluronic acid fragments at the epidermal level functions as a positive biological signal for keratinocytes and fibroblasts, supporting the natural synthesis of type I collagen and improving the biomechanical properties (firmness and elastic recoil) of mature or photo-damaged skin.
Main Properties
- Long-Lasting Deep Hydration: Fixes water molecules in lower epidermal layers, ensuring long-lasting hydration that does not wash away with the first wash.
- Plumping Effect from Within: Restores natural skin volume and provides a feeling of skin density.
- Anti-Aging Restructuring Agent: Helps smooth and refine skin texture, fading the appearance of established wrinkles.
- Sensory Compatibility: Leaves no sticky, shiny, or occlusive film, making it ideal for formulations intended for all skin types, including combination or oily skin.
Applications
- Cosmetic ingredient recommended for creating a wide range of cosmetic products.
- Intensive anti-aging serums and hydrating booster treatments.
- Day and night creams for restructuring mature, devitalized, or dehydrated skin.
- Lightweight facial lotions, hydrating gels, and cellular renewal treatments.
- Dermatocosmetic products for eye and lip contours.
- Premium toning lotions and deep hydration sprays.
Formulation Guide and Advanced Synergies
Unlike the macromolecular variant, LMW Hyaluronic Acid is much easier to integrate into formulas as it does not tend to form dense gelled clumps. Since it does not thicken the formula, it is excellently suited for aqueous serums at maximum concentration without altering the product's rheology.
- General procedure: Dissolve directly in distilled water or hydrosol from the formula at room temperature. It is recommended to incorporate it at temperatures below 40°C.
- In emulsions: Premixing in a glycol (glycerin, propanediol) is recommended to facilitate incorporation and homogenization.
- pH Range: Stable and active in a pH range between 4.0 and 7.0.
Safety in Use and Storage
Safety Profile: Pure ingredient of biotechnological origin, characterized by an excellent safety profile. It is non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and tolerated by all skin types.
Warnings: For external cosmetic use only. The powder is very fine; avoid inhaling powder during the weighing phase. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: Keep in a tightly closed container, in a dry, cool place, away from moisture.
