Description

Ferulic Acid- The Photoprotective Shield and Antioxidant Stabilizer

Ferulic Acid is a powerful high-performance natural antioxidant, recognized for its ability to neutralize free radicals. It targets the protection of cellular structures against oxidative stress induced by UV radiation and pollution. Beyond its own benefits, Ferulic Acid added to formulas stabilizes vitamins C and E, as well as other antioxidant actives, increasing their ability to protect the skin against photo-aging.

Ingredients (INCI): Ferulic Acid.

Technical Characteristics

  • Origin: Vegetable (usually extracted from rice).
  • Appearance: Crystalline powder, off-white to yellowish in color.
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water. Soluble in ethanol, dispersible in propanediol.
  • Function: High-performance antioxidant, photoprotector, brightening agent.
  • General recommended dosage: 0.5% - 1.0%.

Information from Specialized Literature

Ferulic Acid is a reference molecule in skin care studies:

  • Neutralization of Free Radicals: Its chemical structure allows it to donate electrons extremely easily, neutralizing superoxide, hydroxyl, and nitric oxide type radicals.
  • CE-Ferulic Synergy: Specialized literature confirms that the combination of Ferulic Acid with Vitamins C and E increases the skin's intrinsic solar protection by up to 8 times, providing a strong shield against sunburns.
  • Melanogenesis Inhibition: Studies indicate an effect of reducing pigmentation spots by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, similar to arbutin, but through an antioxidant mechanism.
  • Formula Stability: It is capable of preventing the rapid oxidation of Ascorbic Vitamin C, extending the efficacy duration of facial serums.

Main Properties

  • Potent Anti-Aging: Prevents the degradation of collagen and elastin fibers.
  • Photoprotection Boost: Applied under SPF cream, it maximizes defense against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Evening Out: Contributes to skin radiance and the fading of hyperpigmentation.
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Helps soothe skin exposed to external aggressors (pollution, cigarette smoke).

Applications

  • Intensive antioxidant serums (the famous "CE Ferulic serums").
  • Day creams and anti-pollution urban protection lotions.
  • Anti-spot and skin brightening treatments.
  • After-sun lotions for repairing oxidative damage.
  • Care products for mature or sun-exposed skin.

Formulation Guide

  • Procedure: Ferulic Acid must be previously dissolved in a solvent (such as Propanediol or Ethanol) before being added to the rest of the formula.
  • Stability: Sensitive to light and heat. Add in the final phase, cold (below 40°C).
  • pH Range: Optimal between 3.0 and 5.5. A pH that is too high can lead to the degradation and color change of the product.
  • Ellemental Synergies:
    • The Golden Trio: It must be combined with Vitamin C and Vitamin E for a powerful available antioxidant system.
    • Protection: An interesting association is with Karanja oil and Coenzyme Q10 for protecting the skin from UV rays.
    • Anti-Spot Effect: Use alongside Arbutin to address pigmentation spots from two different directions.

Safety in Use

Profile: Potent active ingredient, well tolerated in the recommended dosages.
Precautions: External cosmetic use. Observe the recommended dosage. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: In a cool, dry place, away from light.

hope this message finds you well.

I am currently working with ferulic acid and would like to ask for your guidance regarding its dilution. Specifically:
1. Recommended solvent for dilution (e.g., propylene glycol) or somethink else.
2. Suggested dilution ratio to achieve a stable solution.
3. Optimal temperature for dissolving ferulic acid.

Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated, as it will help ensure proper handling and stability of the ingredient in our formulations.

Thank you very much for your time and support. I look forward to your guidance.

I have used it in masks at the minute, dissolved in floral water or plain water, with oligo hyaluronic acid, or royal jelly powder. I've also used it just dissolved in plain water to notice the difference. It moisturizes, refreshes, tightens the skin, tightens pores.

I've been using ferulic acid for a little while but I'm glad I discovered it. I recommend it in body milk, you can really see and feel the difference on the skin, same product, with and without ferulic acid.

It is a very good antioxidant, over time if it is not stored properly it will yellow the color. It is very difficult to dissolve in the third phase of emulsions and sometimes white particles of ferulic acid remain so it must be shaken very well

4 stars because I did not find on the website the recommendation to dissolve before use. It crystallized into an emulsion after a few days after preparation. 5 stars for how it feels on the skin after dissolving in propanediol. So I recommend it, with confidence, it is a valuable active!
