Emulsifier GSC
Description
GSC Emulsifier - Standard for Stable and Fine O/W Emulsions
GSC Emulsifier (Glyceryl Stearate Citrate) is a versatile, 100% vegetable-derived anionic oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier approved for natural cosmetics. It is favored by formulators for its ability to create stable emulsions with a classic texture, while offering good skin tolerance.
It forms stable, easy-to-process emulsions and can be used in a wide range of skin care formulations. It provides a light, elegant, and delicate feel to the skin.
Ingredients (INCI): Glyceryl Stearate Citrate.
Characteristics
- Appearance: Cream-colored pellets (beads).
- Emulsion type: Oil-in-Water (O/W).
- Character: Anionic Emulsifier, HLB approximately 12.
- Quality: 100% vegetable origin, approved for natural and organic cosmetics.
Main Properties
- Emulsifying Power: Allows for the creation of emulsions with either a low or high oil phase. It forms stable emulsions with all oils commonly used in skin care products.
- Balanced Sensoriality: Gives creams a rich consistency that is easy to spread upon contact with the skin.
- Moisturizing Effect: Due to its composition, it contributes to maintaining the hydrolipidic barrier, preventing skin dryness.
- Compatibility: Exhibits excellent stability, good electrolyte tolerance, and compatibility with a wide range of active ingredients.
- Consistency Agent: Contributes to the viscosity of the final product, reducing the need for other thickening agents.
Usage Recommendations
General recommended dosage: 0.5% - 4%.
Usage level 2 - 4% as an emulsifier, 0.5 - 2% as a co-emulsifier, with an oil phase between 10 - 30%.
Applications
- Moisturizing face and body creams.
- Care products for children and sensitive skin.
- Sun protection and after-sun products.
- Self-tanning creams and emulsions.
Formulation Guide
- Procedure: Add to the oil phase of the preparation.
- Temperature: Heat both phases (oil and water) to approximately 75°C - 80°C before emulsification.
- Homogenization: Pour the oil phase into the aqueous phase under vigorous stirring until the emulsion forms, then continue with moderate mixing until cooled.
- pH Range: Optimal between 5.5 and 8.0.
- Technical tip: Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Behenyl Alcohol, and Stearic Acid have proven to be the most effective consistency enhancers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why did my emulsion separate after I added lactic acid?
GSC Emulsifier is sensitive to a pH that is too low. If you lower the pH below 5.0, the emulsion structure can become destabilized, leading to phase separation.
Can it be used as the sole emulsifier?
While it is a standalone emulsifier (self-emulsifying), it is advisable to combine it with co-emulsifying agents for more complex formulas and longer-term stability.
Is it suitable for oily skin?
Yes, it can form lightweight creams depending on the specific formulation.
Safety in Use
Profile: Safe, biodegradable, non-irritating ingredient. Widely used in the food industry as well.
Precautions: Keep out of reach of children. Do not ingest. Avoid direct contact with eyes in its pure state.
Storage: Store in the original packaging in a cool, dry place (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture.
