Emulsifier Btms
Description
Btms – Emulsifier, Conditioning Agent, Antistatic, Detangling
Vari-Btms Emulsifier is a cationic (positively charged) emulsifying and conditioning agent, recognized as the gold standard for hair formulations due to its exceptional substantivity to keratin. It adheres firmly to negatively charged (damaged) hair fibers, reducing friction, eliminating the antistatic effect, and providing easy combing on wet or dry hair. Applied to the skin, it provides a silky feel with a powdery, non-greasy finish.
Former name: Vari-Btms
Ingredients (INCI): Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate.
Technical Characteristics
- Type: Oil-in-Water (O/W), cationic.
- Appearance: White waxy granules/pellets, characteristic odor.
- Optimal pH Range: pH 4.0 - 7.5
- General Dosage: 2% - 10%
Properties and Benefits
- Hair Substantivity: The positive charge electrostatically attaches to damaged areas of the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle, eliminating static, and preventing breakage during combing.
- Detangling: Significantly reduces the force required for combing wet and dry hair, offering natural shine and a silky, fluid hair feel.
- Sensory Profile: In skin care formulations, it neutralizes the greasy or sticky feel of oils, leaving a powdery finish.
- Self-Emulsifying, Structuring: Thanks to its cetearyl alcohol fraction, it creates stable, viscous, and creamy emulsions without requiring high additions of auxiliary waxes.
Applications
- Rinse-off hair conditioners and intensive treatment hair masks.
- Leave-in hair care products, leave-in conditioners, styling creams, split-end serums.
- Solid hair conditioning bars and creamy shower bars.
- Body creams, hand/foot lotions with a non-greasy moisturizing effect.
- Beard treatments and post-shave care products.
Formulation Guide and Laboratory Rules
- Procedure: Btms is introduced into the oil phase with heating; process using the standard hot emulsification method.
- Oil Phase: Can emulsify and stabilize lipid phases between 5% and 25% (plant oils, esters, butters, silicones).
- Stability: Provides the best stability and conditioning performance in slightly acidic environments, at pH 4.0 - 5.5.
- Incompatibility: As a cationic compound, Btms is incompatible with anionic polymers or surfactants.
Safety in Use and Storage
Safety Profile: Safe ingredient with good skin tolerance when used within recommended doses.
Precautions: For external cosmetic use only. In pure form, it can be irritating to the eyes; handle with care. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: Keep in a closed container, in a dry and cool place, protected from light.
