Description
Annatto Powder - Orange-reddish natural colorant, rich in carotenoids, antioxidant profile.
Annatto Powder is obtained from the seeds of the Bixa orellana plant (also known as Urucum). It is a natural colorant appreciated for its golden-orange hue, used in both tinted cosmetic products and soaps. The carotenoids it contains have a generally recognized antioxidant activity.
The seeds of the Annatto plant are coated in a wax rich in carotenoid pigments, the main constituent being bixin, which can represent up to 80% of the seeds' total carotenoid content.
Ingredients: Bixa Orellana Seed Powder
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Powder from dried and ground seeds, orange-reddish color, characteristic odor
- Solubility: Partially fat-soluble (miscible in oils); bixin is also water-soluble in the form of alkaline salts, but in formulation practice it is mainly used as an oil macerate.
- Quality: Typical composition: carotenoids 3.5-6% (up to 13%), of which bixin represents up to 80%; ishwaran; lipids; starch.
- Indicative dosage: 1-10%
Properties and Benefits
- Natural colorant with an orange to reddish hue, depending on dosage.
- Rich in carotenoids (bixin), with generally recognized antioxidant activity for this class of compounds.
- Gives a radiant, golden-orange appearance to the products in which it is incorporated.
Applications
- Decorative beach oils and lotions with a golden/bronzed shade
- Antioxidant and anti-aging creams and serums.
- Skin and hair care as a coloring ingredient.
- Colorant for CP and MP soaps, as an oil macerate or as is.
- Color cosmetics, foundation, lipstick/gloss, powders.
Formulation Guide
- Preparing an oil macerate: Use 100 ml of vegetable oil of choice and 10 g of Annatto powder.
- Shake well to disperse the powder in the liquid and leave to macerate for up to 7 days, shaking occasionally.
- Filter using a coffee filter paper or a dense sieve, and transfer the filtrate to a clean bottle.
- The macerated oil can be used directly in the intended project or stored in a cool place; it is stable for several months.
- The colorant is potent - starting with low dosages and adjusting gradually is recommended to avoid an overly intense/uneven orange shade in the finished product.
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Safe ingredient with good skin tolerance.
- Precautions: External cosmetic use. Being a strong colorant, it may temporarily stain skin, nails, or clothing during handling or at high dosages. It does not provide tested UV/SPF protection and should not be presented or used as a substitute for a sunscreen.
- Storage: Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

I've used it in beach cream with cocoa butter and it came out great. I recently tried it in a mattifying powder recipe with zinc oxide and white clay, I still haven't found the right proportion to be the right color, but I got good feedback on how the powder feels on the face :-)). And I intend to use it in an antiaging eye cream macerated in armorarium oil.
A great natural product for soap coloring and has many skin benefits. I am going to use it combined with other powders in a face mask.
In addition to its beneficial properties for the skin, it gives soaps a spectacular color, especially if we add carrot juice, catina, etc.. is wow!
I really like this powder, I use it for coloring in many products I make. And my husband (I think you know they don't care about color) was very pleased with the color of the shower gel.
It really is very good for tanning, I just made a simple macerate in almond oil, which I used in a few days of sitting in the sun, and my skin didn't get red as usual, it gave me a nice tan, my skin didn't dry or exfoliate afterwards. Of course I didn't overdo it, I just stayed on in the morning and after meals, in moderation.
I used it in my face cream for tanning, it brightens my complexion and has a beautiful color. i recommend
I created a macerate with this powder and colored the body butter. It's great to be able to give 100% natural color to a product and also benefit from the wonderful properties of the powder used to get the color.
When you see the price for caps in a pharmacy for preparing a white skin for sun exposition.Oups ! Here is a good economy and efficacity because it protect damage by burn sun. It s fantastic I use it during : 2 weeks before my sun exposition, during the sun exposition and 2 weeks after. No burn !!!
I bought this powder (as an active skin protectant) to make Golden Peach Soap (recipe on Elemental). The soap is very good and with a pleasant odor. I recommend.
I used this powder with miraculous properties to create a melt and pour soap with exfoliating properties for the body. I was pleasantly impressed by the quality of the soap made
Completely changes skin tone, can be used in several variations, f faina. Used in body cream
I did 2 masks a week and after 2 weeks I noticed an improvement. Be careful, do this at night before bed, because the face is completely orange (like with turmeric), it fades overnight, and the next day you have a healthy blush! I also use it in foundation which was too white, I put on too much and it came out a very orange foundation. Be careful with this super coloring product.
It can work very easily with powder. The macerate came out super fine. It has very pleasant texture and color.
Urucum powder makes me happy even just for its color. I prepare an oily macerate that I apply before sun exposure to benefit from the protection against ultra violet rays and anti-aging. I got a radiant tan. At the same time it provides antioxidants.
I have been using urucum powder for many years for a nice tan mixed with oil or cocoa butter. An even and long lasting tan.
I use it after maceration for hair, in tanning lotions, as a soap colorant and for coloring cheeses
I use urucum powder for macerating sunscreen products. It promotes the tan but also protects
I use this powder for coloring soap and it comes out great. I also use it in the summer for highlighting my tan.
I made the infusion and couldn't wait 7 days to try it for coloring soaps. It has excellent coloring power and a gorgeous shade of yellow.
