Description

Alkanet Powder - Reddish-violet natural colorant for ruby, pink, grey, or purple shades in oil-based preparations.

Alkanet Powder is obtained from the ground root of the Alkanna tinctoria plant, a traditional source of a fat-soluble red dye. It imparts a ruby red color to oil preparations, with nuances of pink, grey, blue, or purple, depending on the amount used and the alkalinity of the formula in which it is incorporated – a unique trait that makes it a natural colorant particularly valued in soapmaking, where it visibly reacts to pH.

It is a versatile colorant used in cosmetics (tinted oils, balms, body butters, creams) as well as in soaps, candles, and hair dyeing, where, combined with red henna, it enhances auburn/mahogany highlights.

Ingredients (INCI): Alkanna Tinctoria Root Powder

Technical Characteristics

  • Appearance: Reddish-brown powder, characteristic odor
  • Solubility: Miscible in oils (liposoluble colorant); insoluble in water. To extract the pigment (alkannin), preparing an oil macerate is recommended.
  • Quality: The pigment responsible for the color is alkannin (a naphthoquinone), which is pH-sensitive: shifting toward red in an acidic medium, and toward blue-grey in an alkaline medium.
  • Indicative dosage: 1-10%

Properties and Benefits

  • Natural, fat-soluble colorant offering a wide spectrum of possible shades (pink, ruby red, grey, blue, purple), depending on dosage and formula pH.
  • In soapmaking: shades ranging from light blue to dark blue-grey, or purple to plum tones.
  • In candles: pink to raspberry red color.
  • In oils, creams with pH below 6, anhydrous creams, balms: pink to raspberry red color.
  • In hair dyeing: combined with red henna, it enhances auburn/purple highlights.

Applications

  • Tinted oils, balms, body butter, sticks, creams.
  • Cold process or melt & pour soaps, candles.
  • Hair dyeing, in combination with red henna.

Formulation Guide

  • Preparing an oil macerate: Use 100 ml of vegetable oil of choice and 10 g of alkanet powder.
  • Allow to macerate for up to 7 days, shaking occasionally.
  • Filter using a coffee filter paper or dense sieve, then incorporate the resulting tinted oil into your formulation.
  • The process can be accelerated by heating the oil and powder mixture in a water bath at a maximum of 50°C for up to one hour.
  • In alkaline pH formulas (e.g., cold process soap during the saponification stage), the resulting color is blue-grey; for red/purple shades, the final formula must have a pH closer to neutral/acidic.
  • A small test batch is recommended prior to larger production to determine the dosage that yields the desired shade, results vary based on oil type and pH.

Usage Safety and Storage

  • Profil: Natural colorant with good skin tolerance at recommended dosages.
  • Precautions: External cosmetic use.
  • Storage: Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

For me it's a must in lavender soap. Unfortunately, lately, I can't seem to get that specific purple. I don't know if it's from the powder or I'm doing something wrong .

A chameleonic coloring. In a basic environment it changes color from violet to gray. An excellent natural coloring alternative to CP soaps.

With Alkanet powder I color various soaps and lip balm nicely. In order to get the desired color, small samples must be made first, thus determining the dosage of powder. Recommendation.

Despite the red color, in cold soaps, the color changes to gray-blue. Alkana dye has antiseptic properties and the cosmetics in which it is present helps to relieve inflammation, soothes the skin and moisturizes. I didn't dare to use it for my hair.

A very good pigment but it's quite hard to homogenize, you need to mix it longer in the product, but the color is nice.

Very good as a natural colorant in CP soaps. In hot and very hot preparations(I think somewhere over 45-50 degrees) it turns purple/purple depending on the amount used, in conditioner it stays red.

I ordered again the alkanet powder from you because I have used it before and made a lavender soap with a gorgeous color following your recommended use. Thank you Elemental for the quality products, for the promptness in honoring the orders and for the mutual understanding!
