Description

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is the feminine essential oil par excellence, traditionally recognized for the support it offers during periods of menstrual discomfort, premenstrual syndrome, and the menopausal transition. Alongside these specific applications, it excels as a sebum-regulating ingredient for oily skin and the scalp, as an antispasmodic in massage, and as a persistent base note in perfumery. Its floral-sweetish aroma, with notes of hay, amber, and a lightly musky background, is unmistakable and fascinatingly different from Sage (Salvia officinalis).

Unlike Sage (which is camphorous, with thujone and strict contraindications), Clary Sage is gentle on the skin and well tolerated. Its main constituents, linalyl acetate and linalool, grant it a powerful antispasmodic and nervous calming profile, while sclareol and diterpenols provide its distinct aroma.

air Olfactory profile: Floral-sweetish, with notes of fresh hay, amber, and a lightly musky undertone. Tenacious and persistent, it is an aroma that surprises and seduces, completely different from what one would expect from a "sage" oil.

Ingredients: Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia Sclarea Oil)
100% pure and natural, E.O.B.B.D. botanically and biochemically defined, full spectrum, unfractionated, undiluted

Questions and Answers (FAQ)

Q: Why does it sometimes smell like sweat, is the product okay?
A: Yes, this is completely normal. The musky and amber notes of Clary Sage can olfactorily evoke human pheromones or warm sweat, it is a characteristic of its chemical profile, not a quality defect. The aroma evolves on the skin: immediately after application, the herbaceous notes dominate, which progressively soften into a sweet-amber background. It tones down beautifully when diluted in blends with citrus or floral oils.

Q: Is it truly estrogenic, or is it a myth?
A: The answer is nuanced. Sclareol, the compound associated with estrogenic effects, is present in the distilled oil in small concentrations, and in much higher levels in the absolute. Tisserand analyzed this question in detail and concluded that at these concentrations, a direct estrogenic effect is unlikely. Its traditional utility in dysmenorrhea and menopause exists and is clinically documented, but it is more plausibly mediated through the antispasmodic action of linalyl acetate rather than sclareol. Out of caution, the contraindication for hormone-dependent cancers remains valid.

Q: What is the difference compared to Sage in the Ellemental range?
A: They are entirely different species with completely distinct profiles. Sage (Salvia officinalis) is dominated by camphor and thujone, making it powerful and restrictive. Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is dominated by linalyl acetate and linalool, rendering it mild, relaxing, and sebum-regulating, without dermocausticity. Their olfactory profiles are also completely different: Sage is sharp and camphorous, while Clary Sage is sweet-herbaceous and musky. They are not interchangeable in any context.
