Description

Ghassoul Clay – Absorbent, Saponiferous, Hair and Skin Purifier

Ghassoul Clay (also known as Rhassoul) is a natural mineral product of volcanic origin, extracted from the Atlas Mountains region in Morocco, possessing cleansing, mild exfoliating, and rejuvenating properties, acting through ion exchange and adsorption mechanisms. Its molecular structure allows it to bind surface impurities and lipids from the skin and hair fiber without degrading the natural hydrolipidic film or the structural skin barrier. It is used as a mineral alternative to classic surfactants in formulations intended for washing and purifying the epidermis or scalp.

It is mainly used for preparing mild mask-type shampoos due to its exceptional ability to absorb impurities without irritating the scalp.

Ingredients (INCI): Moroccan Lava Clay.

Technical Characteristics

  • Appearance: Fine brownish-grey powder, with a neutral odor.
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water and oils. Upon contact with aqueous media, it disperses to generate a suspension with colloidal properties and a slightly creamy texture.
  • Cosmetic function: Mechanical cleansing agent (mineral saponifier), sebum absorbent, hair conditioner, mattifier.
  • Recommended usage dosage: 1% - 100%. Add up to 20% as a texturizing or purifying additive in shampoos, gels, and solid soaps, and higher in facial masks, hair masks, body wraps, or cleansing powders.
  • Stability: Chemically inert mineral, stable to heating processes and across an extended pH range.

Main Properties

  • Physiological Cleansing: Binds devitalized cells and impurities without exerting chemical surfactant action on the stratum corneum.
  • Controlled Lipid Absorption: Reduces excess sebum from the surface of the skin and scalp, diminishing shiny appearance without drying out tissues.
  • Hair Texturizing Effect: Removes residue from hair strands, supporting flexibility, shine, and natural hair volume.
  • Colloidal Rheological Modifier: Forms an unctuous paste when mixed with water, with optimal spreadability and rinsability.

Applications

  • Purifying facial masks for combination, oily, dull, or congestion-prone skin, as well as sensitive skin.
  • Hair masks (No-Poo) intended for natural cleansing of oily scalps and conditioning fine or limp hair.
  • Solid shampoos, dry shampoos, and shower gels in mineral paste form.
  • Solid soaps obtained through the cold process method, as a texturizing agent, secondary absorbent, and natural colorant.
  • Body wraps, spa cleansing treatments, and traditional poultices.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is Ghassoul clay called a saponiferous clay?
The name “Ghassoul” comes from the Arabic verb “rassala”, which translates to “to wash”. Although this mineral contains no soap molecules or surfactants, it possesses a high natural cationic exchange capacity. Upon contact with water, the particles swell and develop a colloidal structure that physically emulsifies fats and impurities present on the skin or hair. These elements are fixed within the clay matrix and eliminated during rinsing with water, providing effective cleansing through purely mechanical action.

What is the correct method for preparing Ghassoul paste to achieve a homogeneous texture?
To avoid clumping, it is recommended to sprinkle the clay powder over lukewarm water or hydrosol without stirring immediately. Leave the mixture to rest for 3-5 minutes to allow the minerals to passively absorb the liquid and swell. After this interval, gentle mechanical stirring will yield a fluid, creamy, and homogeneous paste.

Safety in Use and Storage

Safety Profile: Chemically inert mineral raw material, safe for routine cosmetic use, non-toxic, and non-comedogenic.
Precautions: For external cosmetic use only. Do not apply to open wounds or severely inflamed skin. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: In a closed container, in a dry place, protected from moisture, at room temperature.

I use it 3-4 times a week to cleanse my combination skin. Combined with just water or water and honey. Sometimes I also use it on my body. Cleanses well. I am satisfied.

Jeg har brugt den til både ansigtsmaske og hårvask - begge dele med fin succes. 100g rækker faktisk længere, end jeg havde troet.

I use it to wash my hair. Washes very well without irritating the skin. My hair seems to be thicker. But it is better to use in combination with other supplements so as not to dry the scalp.

The complexion cleansing powder with ghassoul and reetha powder is very good. It's gentle, cleans well of sebum without harshing, and doesn't dry out the skin. (When I first bought the ghassoul powder it was very coarsely ground, but the one I got now is fine.) Thanks for the recipe and products. Wonderful!

A great alternative to shampoo, it cleans hair very well and leaves it very silky. I've been trying the no-poo method for a while now, but hadn't found anything that worked too great for oily hair until now. I've tried this type of clay and it cleans at least as well as shampoo, without the addition of unfriendly chemical solutions. It's not even as complicated as other options and rinses off quite easily.
