Red clay
Description
Red Clay – Absorbent Agent, Mattifier, Skin Mineralizer
Red Clay is a natural mineral product rich in iron oxides and silicates, used in cosmetic formulations due to its sebum absorption capacity and skin cleansing properties. Its specific reddish color is determined by the natural presence of iron compounds in its structure. It is used to remove impurities from the epidermal surface, optically even out skin tone, and revitalize dull skin, offering fine mechanical purification without causing severe dehydration of the stratum corneum. It is particularly suitable for mature, dull, and tired-looking skin, as well as reactive skin prone to redness.
Our cosmetic clays originate from the Mediterranean basin. They feature excellent microbiological purity due to the drying/crushing method applied at the extraction platform.
Ingredients (INCI): Montmorillonite.
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Fine powder, brick-red color, odorless.
- Solubility: Insoluble in water and oils. Disperses in aqueous or lipid media, forming homogeneous pastes or suspensions.
- Cosmetic function: Absorbent agent, mattifier, opacifier, secondary natural colorant, gentle abrasive.
- Recommended usage dosage: 1% - 100%. Used up to 10% in emulsions and creams, and higher in powders, makeup products, facial masks, and wraps.
- Thermal and pH stability: Stable to heat and across a wide pH range.
Main Properties
- Controlled Lipid Absorption: Binds excess sebum from the skin surface through adsorption, diminishing light reflection and shiny appearance.
- Textural Revitalization: Mechanically removes devitalized cells from the stratum corneum, supporting an even and fresh appearance of dull skin.
- Mineral Supply of Oxides: The presence of natural iron compounds contributes to optical toning and subtle tinting of the skin surface.
- Natural Opacifier: Provides consistency, texture, and specific color to cosmetic and hygiene preparations.
Applications
- Purifying and revitalizing facial masks for normal, combination, tired-looking, or dull skin.
- Body wraps and poultices designed to improve skin texture appearance.
- Solid soaps obtained through cold processing (Cold Process), functioning as a natural colorant and texturizing agent.
- Mineral makeup products for chromatic adjustment of formulas.
- Body scrubs and gentle mechanical gommage products.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is red clay specifically recommended for dull or tired skin?
Red clay contains a high percentage of iron oxides and specific trace elements. Unlike green clay, which exhibits very high adsorption power and can dry out the skin, red clay has a moderate action. It cleanses pores while optically enhancing skin surface brightness by removing dead cells, making it suitable for restoring a fresh skin appearance without disrupting the hydrolipidic barrier.
Can red clay stain skin or utensils during use?
Due to its high content of natural iron oxides, the wet powder exhibits strong coloring power. When washed off, it may leave a slight, transient reddish tint on very fair or dry skin, which can be removed with a mild cleanser. Using utensils made of glass, ceramics, or high-quality stainless steel is recommended, as porous surfaces may retain pigment.
