Description
Sericite – Silky mineral with an optical blur effect for imperfections, premium sensory feel.
Sericite is a fine-grained variety of cosmetic-grade Mica. Its lamellar structure, composed of extremely thin and flat particles, grants it a skin slip and velvety softness far superior to regular micas, making it a reference standard in mineral makeup formulations and high-quality powders.
Unlike decorative mica used for pearlescent effects, this sericite is non-pearlescent (without pearl luster), a property that makes it ideal as a neutral texturizing base that does not interfere with the color or finish of pigments added to the formula.
Ingredients (INCI): Mica
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Fine white powder, neutral odor; average particle size 5-15 µm, specific surface area 8 ± 2 m²/g.
- Solubility: Insoluble in water and oils; disperses in the powder phase or oil phase of the formula.
- Quality: Cosmetic grade, in compliance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009
- Recommended Dosage: 5-30%, for skincare and makeup products
Properties and Benefits
- Remarkable slip and soft-touch feel upon application, thanks to the fine lamellar particle structure.
- Non-pearlescent semitransparent: adds no pearl luster, making it compatible with any desired finish (matte, satin, or pearlescent, depending on the rest of the formula).
- Soft-focus optical effect: scatters light at the skin's surface, visually blurring pores and fine lines.
- Good excess sebum absorption capacity, useful for a long-lasting matte finish.
- Enhances adherence and uniform deposition of pigments and other powders in the formulation.
- Reflects light, reducing the visibility of fine lines.
- Natural mineral origin, free from surface treatments.
Applications
- Useful cosmetic ingredient as a base for loose powders, compact powders, eye shadows, blushes, and body powders.
- Excellent support for creating mineral makeup; can be a good substitute for talc.
- Loose and pressed powders, powder foundation, blush, and eyeshadow.
- Liquid foundation, cream, and makeup primers as a texturizing and optical blurring agent.
- Skincare products with a mattifying effect or enhanced sensory profile (creams, emulsions, sticks).
Formulation Guide
- In anhydrous formulas (powders, sticks): dry-blend with the remaining powders (pigments, mica, silica) prior to incorporating into the fatty phase to ensure homogeneous dispersion and prevent clumping.
- In emulsions: preferably add during the cooling phase under sustained stirring to achieve uniform distribution and prevent settling.
- Being non-pearlescent, it pairs well with all types of pigments without diluting or altering their color and luster, functioning as a neutral texturizing base.
- Compatible with a wide range of pH levels (4.5-7 for aqueous dispersion), making it suitable for most standard cosmetic formulas.
- Dosage is adjusted according to the desired sensory feel and coverage: lower concentrations (5-10%) for a subtle velvety effect in creams, higher concentrations (up to 30%) for powders and foundations.
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Safe mineral ingredient with good skin tolerance, permitted in all cosmetic product categories under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
- Precautions: External cosmetic use. Being a fine powder, avoiding inhalation during handling is recommended.
- Storage: Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place, protected from light.

This mica powder is not completely transparent, it can have a white effect if applied a lot, but a light layer or with a touch of foundation is excellent! I use it as a makeup base. It is beautiful.
