Neroli essential oil
Description
Neroli (Citrus aurantium amara) is extracted from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, not from the peel or leaves, but exclusively from the white blossoms hand-harvested at the peak of blooming. Approximately 1,000 kg of petals yield 1 kg of oil, which explains the price and value of this essence. In cosmetic applications, it is considered a skin regenerator for mature, couperose-prone, or scarred skin, known to stimulate cellular renewal and contribute to an even skin appearance. Aromatherapeutically, it is anxiolytic and a nervous balancer, with documented properties. In perfumery, it is one of the most prized floral heart notes in the natural palette.
Its aroma evolves on the skin in a distinctive manner: upon first application or opening the bottle, it features a green-herbaceous, slightly bitter note that can surprise. A few minutes later, on the skin or on a tissue, it opens into a citrus-floral, sweeter, and warmer scent.

In natural perfumes, it integrates into florals alongside Jasmine Absolute and Rose Absolute, into orientals with Sandalwood and Bergamot, or on its own in unisex citrus-floral roll-ons.
Questions and Answers (FAQ)
Q: Why does it sometimes smell "medicinal" or green-bitter instead of floral?
A: The nerolidol and beta-pinene in its composition yield a green-herbaceous note upon initial opening, which can disorient expectations of a classic floral. Neroli should not be judged directly from the bottle. On a tissue or on the skin, a few minutes later, it evolves toward its characteristic sweet-citrus floral note. Another factor: Neroli matures over time, an older, well-preserved bottle possesses a rounder and more floral aroma than a freshly distilled one.
Q: What is the difference compared to Petitgrain and to Bitter Orange peel oil?
A: They come from the same tree (Citrus aurantium amara), but are three completely different products. Neroli, from the flowers, is the finest, most expensive, with a specific floral-anxiolytic profile. Petitgrain, from the leaves and branches, is greener, woodier, more budget-friendly, with a similar biochemical profile but a different olfactory character. Bitter orange peel oil, cold-pressed, is purely citrus and phototoxic (containing furanocoumarins). Neroli distilled from flowers is non-phototoxic.
