Urea cosmetic
Description
Cosmetic Urea
A key component of the skin's natural moisturizing factor, in a pure, cosmetic-grade form.
Urea is one of the substances that the skin itself produces naturally as part of the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) present in the stratum corneum. Over time, exposure to external factors and aging reduce the natural concentration of urea in the skin, which contributes to a feeling of dry, rough, and tight skin.
As a cosmetic ingredient, urea restores this balance: it binds and retains water in the stratum corneum, supports the natural moisture barrier, and, at higher concentrations, helps gently remove flaky cells from the skin surface. It is a versatile ingredient used in daily facial and body care, as well as in formulations dedicated to areas with thickened skin, such as hands, elbows, or heels.
Ellemental Cosmetic Urea is of high purity, available in the form of small granules that are completely soluble in water, making it easy to incorporate into the aqueous phase of any DIY formulation.
Ingredients (INCI): Urea.
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Crystalline solid in the form of small granules; white color; discreet, characteristic odor
- Solubility: Soluble in water
- Quality: Cosmetic-grade urea with high purity
- Recommended Dosage: 1 - 20%, depending on the application area and desired effect
Scientific Studies and Documentation
In dermato-cosmetic literature, it is well known that urea acts differently depending on its concentration: below approximately 10%, it functions predominantly as a humectant, whereas from this threshold upward, a keratolytic effect gradually emerges, removing flaky cells from the skin's surface. At very high concentrations (above 40%), used exclusively in specialized dermatological contexts, urea can even soften the structure of the nail. These concentration-effect correlations are consistently documented in scientific literature dedicated to this ingredient, which has been used for decades in cosmetics and dermatology to support hydration and improve the texture of dry skin.
Properties and Benefits
- Effective humectant with a visible moisturizing effect over both short and long terms
- Supports the natural barrier function of dry skin
- Smooths skin texture, reducing the appearance of rough or flaky skin
- At higher concentrations, provides a keratolytic effect useful for areas with thickened skin
- Skin penetration enhancer: promotes the absorption of other active ingredients in the same formula
Applications
- Facial care: hydrating serums and creams, masks, products for skin prone to dryness
- Body care: body creams and milks, hand creams, foot and heel creams where higher concentrations are traditionally used
- Scalp and hair care: scalp lotions, shampoos for scalps prone to dryness and dandruff-like flaking
- Hygiene products: cleansers, shower gels, deodorants, wet wipes
Formulation Guide
- Low concentrations (1 - 5%): suitable for facial care formulations where the primary focus is a humectant effect without discomfort
- Medium concentrations (5 - 10%): suitable for body and hand creams, delivering sustained hydration
- High concentrations (10 - 20%): reserved for areas with thicker, more resistant skin (feet, heels, elbows) where a texture-smoothing effect is also desired; preliminary testing on a small area is recommended, as a temporary stinging sensation may occur on sensitive or micro-cracked skin at these levels
- Compatible with most commonly used cosmetic ingredients
- Dissolves easily in the aqueous phase of the formulation at room temperature or slightly warmed
- Add to the formulation at a maximum temperature of 75°C to prevent degradation
- The final pH of the formula should preferably be adjusted around 6.5 for optimal stability and application comfort
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Safe ingredient with good skin tolerance
- Precautions: External cosmetic use
- Storage: Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place, protected from light
