Lanolin
Description
Lanolin – Exceptional capacity to retain water and protect dry skin.
Lanolin (Adeps Lanae), from a cosmetic perspective, is a natural emollient and emulsifier with a special affinity for the skin, its structure is close to that of human sebum, giving it good tolerance and a long-lasting moisturizing effect. It is especially appreciated for areas with very dry, cracked, or frequently exposed skin to aggressive factors.
It is the natural wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep, which protects the wool fiber against external factors. It is obtained by purifying wool grease resulting from washing raw wool, through a process known since antiquity.
Ellemental Lanolin is highly purified, an essential aspect for a good safety profile, given that less refined forms of this raw material are associated with a higher risk of skin sensitization.
Ingredients (INCI): Lanolin
Technical Characteristics
- Appearance: Unctuous, waxy mass of soft consistency; pale yellow color; discreet, characteristic odor; melting point approximately 36 - 42°C
- Solubility: Insoluble in water, but capable of absorbing large amounts of water (up to 2-3 times its own weight, depending on quality); soluble in oils and fats
- Quality: Highly purified cosmetic-grade lanolin, with an HLB value of approximately 4, suitable for water-in-oil formulations; of animal origin (sheep's wool), unsuitable for vegan formulations
- Recommended Dosage: 1 - 100%, depending on the formulation type and desired emollient effect
Properties and Benefits
- Biomimetic emollient with long-lasting moisturizing and protective effect
- A lipid complex rich in wax esters and sterols
- High capacity to retain water in the skin
- Consistency agent contributing to the texture and stability of the formula
- Structure close to that of human sebum, with high skin affinity
Applications
- Creams and ointments for very dry, rough, or cracked skin
- Balms and creams for exposed areas (hands, elbows, heels)
- Lipsticks and makeup products as a texturizing and emollient agent
- Lip care and nipple care
Formulation Guide
- Melt together with the oil phase of the formulation
- Recommended to combine with other fats and oils for an easier-to-work-with texture, as pure lanolin can be sticky and difficult to apply alone
- At low concentrations (1 - 3%), it provides added emolliency without weighing down the product's texture; at higher concentrations (5 - 10%), it is suitable for formulations dedicated to very dry skin
- Has emulsifying and stabilizing properties in W/O emulsions and inhibits crystallization in anhydrous products based on vegetable butters
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Ingredient with good tolerance in its highly purified form; BHT-free
- Precautions: External cosmetic use; avoid in formulations intended for individuals with known sensitivity to lanolin or wool
- Storage: Store in a closed container in a cool, dry place, protected from light
