Questions and Answers (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between Ravintsara and Ravensara, how can I avoid confusing them?
A: They are completely different plants. Ravintsara is rich in cineole and its scent is reminiscent of eucalyptus, while Ravensara features a distinct spicy-aniseed aroma. They possess entirely different properties and are not interchangeable.

Q: How did the camphor tree end up producing an oil without camphor in Madagascar?
A: This is a fascinating example of chemical adaptation by a plant. Cinnamomum camphora is native to Asia, where it produces an oil rich in camphor. When brought to Madagascar by the Chinese in the 19th century, the tree gradually adapted to the local soil and climate, its essential synthesis changed naturally, losing the camphor and accumulating 1,8-cineole instead. It is the exact same tree but with a different chemistry, providing a perfect illustration of what a chemotype means in the world of essential oils.

Q: Is it safe to use daily, and for how long?
A: Ravintsara features a very good safety and tolerance profile, but like most essential oils, it should not be used continuously over an extended period of time.
