Sodium Lactate (Sodium Lactate)
Sodium Lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid and a highly effective humectant used in cosmetic formulations to support hydration, skin conditioning, and a smoother, more supple feel. As a component associated with the skin’s natural moisturizing factors, it helps attract and retain water in the stratum corneum, improving comfort and reducing the appearance of dryness. It is also valued as a buffering/pH-adjusting ingredient and can contribute to overall formula robustness by helping optimize pH and, in some systems, supporting preservation performance through water activity management. Sodium Lactate is commonly incorporated into lotions, creams, serums, cleansers, shaving products, soaps, and hair care formulas where improved moisture retention and manageability are desired. Use level is formulation-dependent and typically balanced with other humectants and thickeners to achieve the target sensory profile while maintaining clarity, stability, and compatibility within the finished product.
