Lanolin (Lanolin)

Lanolin is a naturally derived waxy emollient obtained from wool and widely used in cosmetic formulations for its rich skin-conditioning and barrier-supportive benefits. With a composition of complex esters and lipids, it helps replenish surface lipids, reduce the feeling of dryness, and improve softness and suppleness, making it especially suitable for very dry, chapped, or compromised-looking skin. Lanolin also functions as an effective water-in-oil emulsifier and consistency agent, supporting stable textures and enhanced occlusivity in protective creams and balms. Typical applications include lip care, hand and foot creams, body butters, ointment-like treatments, nipple-care products, and cold-weather barrier creams, often paired with petrolatum alternatives, vegetable butters, ceramides, and humectants to optimize comfort and performance. Use level and formulation approach are guided by grade selection (refining level, odor/color profile, and purity), potential sensitization considerations, and compatibility within the finished system according to supplier specifications and regional regulatory requirements.
