Hydroxystearic Acid (Hydroxystearic Acid)

Hydroxystearic Acid is a fatty-acid derivative used in cosmetic formulations primarily as a structuring agent, gellant, and rheology modifier for oil-based systems. It helps build viscosity and create stable oleogels, improving body and consistency while delivering a smooth, controlled glide and a more refined, non-runny texture. In anhydrous and high-oil formulas, it can support pigment suspension, reduce the perception of oiliness, and enhance stability and payoff—making it particularly useful in lip products and color cosmetics. Typical applications include lipsticks, lip balms, glosses, foundations, concealers, sunscreens, balms, and hair styling products where enhanced structure, improved wear, and a cushiony sensorial profile are desired. Use level and processing are formulation-dependent and are optimized with the selected oils, esters, and waxes to achieve the target hardness, spread, and thermal stability.
