Astaxanthin (Astaxanthin)

Astaxanthin is a highly potent carotenoid antioxidant widely valued in cosmetic formulations for helping defend skin against the visible effects of environmental stressors and photo-induced oxidative damage. Known for its characteristic red-orange hue, it supports a more resilient, radiant appearance by helping to reduce the look of dullness and early signs of aging associated with free-radical activity. Astaxanthin is typically used at very low levels and is most often incorporated into oil phases, lipid-based serums, emulsions, and encapsulated delivery systems to optimize stability and performance. It is commonly featured in “anti-oxidative,” “anti-pollution,” and “photo-protective support” concepts, pairing well with other antioxidants such as tocopherol, ascorbyl derivatives, and coenzyme Q10 to reinforce overall efficacy. Formulation is generally managed with attention to light/oxygen sensitivity, packaging, and processing conditions to help preserve color and activity in leave-on products.
