Astaxanthin
Description
Astaxanthin – Natural Antioxidant Concentrate, Photoprotector
Astaxanthin is a standardized extract with exceptional antioxidant capacity, exerting a positive effect on skin aging processes, natural cellular protection, and the improvement of skin appearance and texture. It acts as a free radical scavenger within the lipid structures of the skin, reducing the effects of oxidative stress induced by ultraviolet radiation. It also intervenes in melanin synthesis processes, making it useful in formulations designed to even out skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation spots.
It belongs to the class of xanthophylls and non-provitamin A carotenoids and represents a 100% natural, purified concentrate extracted from the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis via supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) fluid extraction technology.
Ingredients (INCI): Astaxanthin.
Characteristics, Specifications
- Content: 100% natural purified astaxanthin concentrate standardized to a minimum pure astaxanthin content of 5%.
- Appearance: Red viscous oil.
- Solubility: Liposoluble (dissolves in oils, vegetable butters, and esters). Insoluble in water.
- Recommended usage dosage: 0.01% - 0.1%
Main Properties
- Broad-Spectrum Antioxidant: Diminishes oxidative stress by reducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals, thereby preventing protein and membrane lipid oxidation, cellular DNA damage, and associated inflammatory phenomena. Exhibits an antioxidant activity 10 times higher than beta-carotene and surpasses vitamin E in efficiency.
- Secondary Photoprotection: Acts as a protective biological shield against the harmful effects of UV radiation, mitigating light-induced structural degradation at the epidermal level.
- Pigmentation Balancing: Inhibits melanin synthesis and supports its stable deposition in tissues, contributing to evening out skin tone and reducing the visibility of freckles or age spots.
- Skin Metabolism Support: Stimulates local cellular metabolism and optimizes moisture levels in the stratum corneum.
- Micro-Relief Improvement: By increasing moisture levels, it improves skin elasticity and suppleness, resulting in a visible reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Natural Colorant: Due to its intense native pigmentation, it imparts natural shades of yellow, orange, and red to cosmetic products depending on the dosage used.
Applications
- Anti-aging creams and lotions intended for mature, wrinkled, or photo-damaged skin.
- Facial emulsions and oily serums designed for antioxidant protection and regeneration.
- Formulations for evening skin tone, fading hyperpigmentation spots, and adding radiance.
- Pre- and post-sun exposure care products (day creams, protective lotions).
- Premium cosmetic products for intensive face and body care.
Formulation Guide
Cosmetic ingredient mainly used as an anti-aging agent, an excellent active ingredient for skin evening formulations and solar care products:
- Procedure: Add to the final phase of the formulation, at a temperature below 40°C.
- Color Management: Due to the high concentration of native red pigment, even minimum dosage usage will influence the color of the preparation. Adjust dosage precisely to achieve the desired aesthetics of the finished product.
- Odor Influence: In its pure state, Astaxanthin has a strong specific algal odor, which is not prominently noticeable in compositions when included at appropriate dosages.
Safety in Use and Storage
Safety Profile: Safe at normal cosmetic usage concentrations, exhibiting good skin tolerance.
Precautions: For external cosmetic use only. Avoid direct contact of the pure product with eyes. The pure product stains clothes and work surfaces; handle carefully using appropriate utensils. Keep out of reach of children.
Storage: Keep in a tightly closed container, in a dry and cool place, protected from sunlight.
