Menthol – Natural crystals with an intense cooling effect and a fresh scent
Natural menthol is obtained by crystallizing the essential oil of Mentha arvensis (cornmint), one of the primary natural sources of this compound. In the form of pure crystals, it is one of the most widely used ingredients for its immediate cooling effect upon contact with the skin or mucous membranes, an easily recognizable physical sensation.
Due to this strong sensory effect and its fresh, characteristic aroma, natural menthol is used in small concentrations in scalp products, aftershaves, lip balms, body gels, and foot care products, where it contributes to an immediate feeling of freshness and comfort for the user.
Being a highly concentrated and sensorially active ingredient, menthol crystals are always used in small, carefully measured amounts and require cautious handling.

Formulation Guide
- For anhydrous formulations (oils, ointments, sticks, balms): melt directly into the heated oil phase at approximately 40°C as the final step, under stirring until completely dissolved
- For gels and aqueous solutions: being practically insoluble in water, pre-dissolving in a small amount of high-proof ethyl alcohol is recommended before incorporating into the aqueous phase
- Always dose with great care, starting with low concentrations and adjusting gradually due to its intense sensory effect even in small amounts
- Do not use near the eyes or mucous membranes, except in formulations specifically designed and tested for these areas at very low concentrations
Usage Safety and Storage
- Profile: Pure menthol (crystals) is irritating to the skin and eyes; once diluted to standard formulation concentrations, it is a well-tolerated ingredient
- Precautions: External cosmetic use; in pure form, handle with protective gloves and avoid direct contact with skin, eyes, or mucous membranes; in case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water; do not swallow; do not use on children under 6 years of age; consult a physician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, elderly, or have a serious medical condition

Used it to make the cooling shower gel recipe. Easy to follow and it did have a nice cooling effect even during the hottest part of the summer.
I use these menthol crystals in my shower gel, for the feeling of freshness and coolness they provide. I will be looking for other recipes that contain menthol crystals because I am a big fan of the minty scent.
The intense, slightly sweet odor lingers long in the ointment. Dissolves completely in hot water or oil, leaves no residue. I would have liked if you had the peppermint crystal version as well. Very happy with the product!
Ideal to use to make after beach sprays and creams. Dissolves quickly and has no impurities. The crystals are fairly whole in the can, this helps to not release the volatile oil quickly on longer storage.
