Sodium Hydroxide (Sodium Hydroxide)
Sodium Hydroxide is a highly effective pH adjuster and neutralizing agent used in cosmetic formulations to achieve and maintain the desired acidity/alkalinity for stability, performance, and skin feel. It is commonly employed to neutralize acidic ingredients (such as certain polymers or exfoliating acids), to optimize the viscosity of carbomer and acrylic-based gels, and to fine-tune the pH of cleansers, shampoos, creams, and lotions to support preservative efficacy and overall formula compatibility. In traditional soapmaking, sodium hydroxide is used for saponification, reacting with fatty acids to form soap; in finished products, it is present only as residual trace levels when properly processed and balanced. Because it is strongly alkaline in its raw form, it is handled with strict manufacturing controls, and use is carefully calculated to ensure the final product meets appropriate safety and regulatory requirements for its intended application.
