Description

Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is the essential oil of choice for muscular relaxation, good sleep, and relieved anxiety, acting as a gentler counterpart to its cousin, Oregano. Its warm, herbaceous-spicy aroma, with subtle camphorous notes, has a comforting and "countryside" character that makes it pleasant both in a diffuser and in topical products. Its main applications include acting as a muscular and digestive antispasmodic, a nervous sedative for insomnia and anxiety, and a rubefacient tonic for poor peripheral circulation and joint comfort.

An essential oil that is perhaps less known to the general public, but one that remains consistent throughout aromatherapy literature.

Questions and Answers (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference compared to Oregano?
A: While they share the same botanical family (Lamiaceae), they possess entirely different profiles. Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is dominated by carvacrol, acting as a powerful, dermocaustic, and stimulating antibacterial. Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is instead dominated by terpinen-4-ol, making it gentle, soothing, and antispasmodic. Aromatically, Oregano is aggressive and sharp, whereas Marjoram is warm and more subdued. They are not interchangeable.

Q: Why does it smell slightly of camphor, is this normal?
A: Yes, completely normal. The chemical profile of Marjoram includes sabinene and alpha-terpinene, which contribute to its slightly camphorous and "airy" notes. This does not mean that the oil contains actual camphor or that it is altered. These notes soften in blends and are perceived less on the skin than directly from the bottle.
